Description

Polygon Racer 3D is a racing game in which the player must race against the clock in a rally across the USA. There are 12 races in total, each corresponding to a state of the United States, going from California to the Maine. In each races, the player must reach the end within the time limit. At each quarter of the race, a time bonus will be awarded. Traffic, obstacles on the road and the type of road itself slow the player down and forces him to adapt his driving. Upgrades can be bought, namely tires, engines and gearboxes to improve the performances of the player’s vehicle. Points are gained through the game and can be submitted to a highscore table at the end of the game.

The graphics are noticeably very retro, all in transparent, black and white wireframe. While contributing to a classic atmosphere, it’s also better suited to implement a “3D mode”, in which two color channels are displayed at different angles, giving a 3D effect when viewed with those old red and blue 3D glasses. This game supports red and blue, red and green and magenta and cyan color schemes.

I wanted to create a game that would support 3D glasses for a while, and since my racing game was fairly suitable for this, it was only natural that I make PR3D. The engine has been of course improved since Freegear; objects all have a collision array, allowing for multiple collision points with specific widths, the camera is now independent from the position of the car, making it possible to change the angle of the camera, and of course, the steering has been improved, providing a much more realistic (or at least playable) behavior. Other improvements need to be made if I’m going to do Freegear 2, but for now I believe it’s already a whole lot better.
